Community Arts

Community Arts Mission Statement : “to promote and develop opportunities for young people to grow in confidence and make a positive contribution within their community”

Community Arts uses the development of creativity to help people develop personal and life-long skills such as team working, independent enquiry, and creative thinking skills. At Ratton we aim to enable young people to recognise and value the contribution they can make to the community and feel a sense of belonging to it.

The list of successful projects the team has undertaken in the last six years is extensive, and too many to mention individually. However, highlights include:

Redoubt Replay and subsequent ‘Playdays’ Originally a partnership project with Willingdon Community Arts, East Sussex Youth Service, Compass Community Arts, Evolution Theatre Company and The Redoubt Fortress & Military Museum. Young people from across the town created a spectacular multi-media performance and installation at the Redoubt Fortress funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund's Young Roots programme. The project continued and developed in to a series of family playdays at the heritage site, increasing awareness of this unique and exciting building and developing creative ways to engage with this shared community space.

Circus Monkeys; a weekly circus club which has seen participants of all ages develop a wide range of skills from juggling to poi and stilt walking to uni-cycling. Members have also performed at Eastbourne's Festival of Fire, the Chichester Festival and at the Winter Gardens.

Eastbourne Shout; a successful communal singing project developed by Ratton and Cavendish Community Arts. The aim is to bring together as many people as possible to share in a good old fashioned sing along, creating shared memories and increase a sense of community spirit. Now in it’s third year participation numbers have grown to over 500. Come along to the BandStand on 27th April, 6.30pm and sing along.

Students in Residence and Primary Outreach; Our students regularly go out to primary schools to lead workshops or assist practitioners.

Our community arts team is keen to hear about any project ideas our students and parents have. For more information call 01323 514322 or email m.wells@ratton.e-sussex.co.uk
