Design Technology - Textiles
Year 7
Students will investigate Natural and Man made/synthetic fabrics. This is followed by the introduction of the ‘The design process’ through this students will explore ways of applying colour on to fabric and then leading on to Designing and Making a cover for their diary/planner.
Year 8
Students will investigate how fabrics can be made to insulate objects/items; forms of decoration are introduce, e.g. appliqué and surface stitchery, together with techniques like quilting. The design process is followed by the setting of a DMA entitled ‘Insulation.’ Students will be expected to make an item to show how insulation techniques work when items are made.
Year 9
Students will be set the DMA entitled ‘To top it all’. They will be expected to follow the design process; collecting research, including a questionnaire, looking at paper pattern markings, selecting / estimating fabrics/ materials and the making their own patterns. The end result will be the making of a hat for themselves or someone else; followed by evaluation techniques.
