Ratton School Art and Design –
“Our Values, Our Vision"

Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people."
Leo Burnett

Throughout the ages Art and Design Technology have played a crucial role in the cultural development of society, from architecture and fashion to the printed word and the development of healthy diet plans. The work of Artists and Designers is accessed and experienced by everyone on a daily basis. Artists and Designers need to work with integrity and respect for others as their work has the power to change the world, set trends and fashions, build the cities and landscapes of the futures, and develop new technologies and innovations. Through the pursuit of creative thinking and solutions to life’s problems Artists and Designers will support economic growth for generations to come.

Art and Design helps us to understand the emotional well being of ourselves and others. It is the responsibility of the artist to push boundaries and challenge stereotypes, to communicate the pains and suffering that touch us, speaking out about injustice and conflicts and the job of the Designer to seek and develop innovative solutions to many of humankind’s problems.
Art and Design inspires the historians, communicating the past truths and chosen view points, from the first cave painting to the present day. It is the muse for musicians and writers.

Our Artists and Designers, in collaboration with the sciences, promote excellence enabling sports people to swim faster and climb higher. To enable everyone to have access to all technologies, providing smart materials to improve, and even save lives. Graphical communication has changed the way the written word and pictures are seen around the world with innovations in photography, ICT, audio and video, manufacturing with the click of a mouse. Developments in nutrition and healthy eating have enabled people to enjoy fulfilling lives for longer.

During their five years at Ratton, we believe that our Art and Design Technology departments will strive to ensure that all students follow a curriculum that develops their creative thinking, encourages problem solving and promotes autonomous learning. We believe that the enjoyment of Art and Design comes from reflecting on one’s own experience and through the understanding of the work of others. The Art and Design departments believe that all year groups should have the opportunity to explore a wide array of materials, techniques and process developing their skill levels through ability not age. We strive to encourage students to push themselves to participate, break boundaries and challenge perception.

As part of the Apollo community the Art and Design departments believe that it provides learners with the skills and understanding to be able to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
